Why it's more normal than you think to have doubts about your future

In the meantime, you might be wondering about a lot of things.

Am I heading in the right direction?
What if I end up regretting it?
Should I continue my studies or start working instead?
Why does everyone else know except me?

Welcome to the club of students who are still unsure. There are actually way more students in this club than you think! It’s perfectly normal to feel uncertain about your future. Although it often feels like you’re falling behind, it actually means you’re seriously thinking about what’s right for you. No one talks about how normal decision-making stress actually is

There’s a lot of talk about making choices. But much less about how overwhelming all those choices can sometimes feel. Because suddenly you have to think about:

  • your major
  • your career
  • your future
  • money
  • where to live
  • “what you want to be when you grow up”

As if you’re supposed to already know what your life is going to look like by the time you’re twenty. No wonder so many students get stuck in doubt. Not because they’re unmotivated, but because there are so many possibilities that every choice feels like something big and important.

Why doubt often arises among ambitious people

This might sound crazy, but a lot of doubt actually stems from caring. People who don’t care about anything usually don’t spend hours worrying about their future. Doubt often arises because you:

  • want to make the right choice
  • are afraid of missing out on opportunities
  • don’t want to “lock yourself in”
  • feel that this choice is important

You’re trying to look ahead to a life you don’t know yet. Of course that feels uncertain.

The pressure to make a “perfect choice”

Many students treat their future as if it were some kind of exam: one wrong choice and everything goes wrong.

But real life almost never works that way. Careers are constantly changing. People change direction, discover new interests, start out one way, and end up somewhere completely different.

Yet online, it often feels as if everyone has a clear-cut plan. You see success stories, fast-track careers, and people who seem to know exactly what they’re doing. But what you usually don’t see are the doubts behind them. And those are almost always there.

Sometimes you’re not “lost,” but simply exploring

That feeling of doubt is often immediately framed as negative. As if you’re:

  • are falling behind
  • indecisive
  • or aren’t ambitious enough

But doubt doesn’t always mean something is going wrong. Sometimes it just means you’re still in the middle of a process where you’re discovering:

  • what gives you energy
  • what doesn’t suit you
  • and how you want to live and work

And honestly? You rarely figure that out just by thinking about it.

Why others suddenly seem so sure of themselves

Many students compare their own thoughts to what they hear from others. You hear someone speaking very convincingly about choosing a master’s program or a job and think, “Why don’t I feel that way?”

But that certainty you hear from someone else is often less absolute than it seems. Many people don’t make a choice because they’re 100% sure it’s the right one, but precisely because they want to try something new. What you choose now doesn’t have to determine your entire future right away; there will be plenty of other moments when you can make a different choice.

The question behind the doubt

Often, doubt isn’t just about school or work. It goes deeper than that. For example:

  • Am I afraid of making the wrong choice?
  • What if I end up regretting it?
  • What if I’m not good enough?
  • Do I want security or freedom?
  • What do others actually expect from me?

And that’s exactly why decision-making stress often feels so overwhelming. It’s not just about a degree program, but about identity, expectations, and visions of the future.

You don’t have to know everything right now

This might be the hardest thing to accept. You don’t have to know exactly right now:

  • what job you’ll have in ten years
  • which path is the perfect fit for you
  • or which path is “the right one”

Most people build their future step by step. Not based on one perfect choice, but on multiple small choices, experiences, and moments when they discover something new.

Just sitting around thinking things over isn't as helpful as you might think

Many students spend months overthinking things. Comparing even more. Making even more lists. Doubting even more. But clarity often comes from taking action. By:

  • talking to people
  • comparing degree programs
  • asking questions
  • exploring your options
  • and figuring out what feels right—or wrong

Not everything has to feel completely certain before you take a step.

Maybe you don’t need to have an answer right now

Maybe that’s the most reassuring thing of all: that you don’t have to figure everything out today.

Your future isn’t a test where you only get one chance. It’s something that unfolds as you move forward. And that’s exactly why it helps to give yourself space to explore without having to make a final decision right away.

At the Master’s Fair, you can explore various degree programs, educational institutions, and organizations in an accessible way. You can ask questions, compare options, and figure out what’s right for you—without the pressure to know for sure right away. After all, sometimes clarity doesn’t start with choosing, but with discovering.
